Vision boards are a handy mindfulness tool to help kids imagine what they would like their future to look like, from the rest of the school year to ten years from now. Through goal setting and visualization, a vision board empowers children to set achievable goals that reflect their wants and needs.

Below, you’ll find a guide for creating a vision board. But before you get started, it’s important to have a discussion with your child about what it means to visualize and set goals. Ask them what their goals may be for the coming year. Let them come up with their own goals, though they may need some helpful nudges to help formulate their thoughts – especially for our younger friends.

It’s also helpful to create a space that lends itself to reflection and mindfulness while children work on this project. Playing music your child enjoys and setting up a comfy spot for them to work are great ways to start!

Supplies:

  • Cardstock or poster board (If you’d rather make a digital vision board, try Canva!)
  • Images, lyrics, words, etc. cut out from magazines and newspapers or printed off the computer
  • Coloring materials
  • Scissors
  • Glue stick

Vocab Words:

Collage: A work of art made up of paper, images, and other pieces of art.

Goal: Something that a person would like to do in the future.

Visualization: The process of imagining what something may be like; how does it feel, look, sound, etc.

Instructions:

  1. To start, set a goal. What do you want to achieve this year?
  1. Once you’ve come up with your goal, it’s time to collect things that represent your goal or inspire you to achieve your goal. For a physical vision board, this may mean cutting pictures out of magazines and newspapers, or you can print photos off from a computer. You can also find embellishments and quotes that remind you of your goal.
  1. Before you start to glue, plan out where you want the images to go. When you’re happy with how everything looks, glue the images down. There is no “right” way to decorate your vision board so organize it however you’d like!
  1. If you’re stumped on how to make your vision board, look up inspiration online or check out the attached images.
  1. When the images are glued down, add embellishments by drawing designs or writing quotes. You can even write your goal right on your vision board.
  1. After adding your last touches, display your vision board where you’ll see it every day. It’ll serve as a great reminder of your goal.
