Friend-a-Fish

What is Friend-a-Fish?

it’s your opportunity to sponsor a hand carved wooden fish created by the late Ed Koch.

Over 200 fish are displayed from the ceiling in the Museum’s first floor Martin Hallway.  Each of these fish were hand-carved and painted by artist and engineer Ed Koch, who gave the fish to the Museum as a teaching tool for children and families.  Ed loved to research the fish he had observed while scuba diving. He crafted replicas of both tropical and freshwater fish.  He also created whimsical imaginary fish to represent thoughts, feelings, and memories.  Ed hoped that each of his fish would inspire; we hope they do more than that.

Friending a fish helps to care and keep Ed’s fish (dusting, cleaning, and repairing in the Fish Hospital).  It also supports the Museum to continue to offer wonderful education programs – like “Fashion a Fish” where participants design a fish using various styles of fins, tails, gills and scales and then determine the fish’s size and shape, and its habitat.  (We think Ed would have loved this program!)
